How to Prep for Moving Day Like a Champ

Packing up and moving into a new home can seem exciting, but also overwhelming. There are a lot of things to be done, but like any big task, it can be broken up into smaller steps. You will be surprised to discover that there are a few simple tips you can use to make the transition into your new home much smoother. Here are five ways to prep for moving day like a champ.

Visit Your Doctor

When relocating, people often forget that they’ll have to find a new doctor. It’s important to make one last trip to visit your old doctor to get a copy of your health and medical records. The same advice can be applied to your dentist and pet veterinarian. After you have obtained copies of your records, take some time to do a little research about the new area and look for a new doctor and dentist. You can even request that your doctor transfers your records to your new chosen doctor.

Before moving, make one last visit to your doctor. Be sure to have your medical records transferred to a new doctor’s office.

Declutter as You Pack

Cleaning the entire house before you pack can turn into a week-long ordeal, but you can also kill two birds with one stone if you declutter as you pack up. To begin, grab a large trash bag and go around tossing out items that are obviously trash, like empty water bottles, used napkins, food wrappers, and scraps. This will instantly give your home a decluttered look, giving you room to pack up easier. Afterward, keep an extra trash bag around as you pack up. This way you will be able to go through all the items one at a time and decide what needs to be kept and what can be trashed or donated to a thrift store.

Keep It Simple

Don’t rush to clean up and pack the entire house all at the same time. It’s important to start off small and simple rather than stretch yourself out in fifteen different directions. Pick a starting point and a finish line. Pick one room and pack up all the items in it before moving onto the next one. Try picking low traffic rooms over high traffic ones, like the kitchen, to avoid remaking messes. Make a simple organization plan to save the most amount of time and prevent confusion.

Hire a Moving Company in Advance

If you can afford to spend a little extra on your move, consider hiring a mover. Professional moving companies can make life a lot easier when it comes to managing the logistics of your move. Just imagine how nice it would be to not have to lift a single box, disassemble any of the furniture, or drive that huge moving truck! Moving companies literally take the load off when it comes to getting your stuff moved. Be sure to check out our list of the best moving companies.

Be prepared for moving day by hiring a mover at least a month in advance and asking friends and family for help ahead of time.

Ask for Help Ahead of Time

It is vital to ask for the help of friends and family in preparation for the big move, but make sure you don’t ask at the very last minute. Ask for help a few months ahead of time and make sure to pick a set date where they can come over and aid in the packing process. If you don’t have a lot of strength, they can even help you move large pieces of furniture and items quickly. Asking for help at the last minute will ensure that people will flake out on you or make people irritable and less willing to help.
